Hanging With My Grandma Was the Nintendo/YouTube of It's Day!
Growing up in the 70’s and 80’s, video games were just making an appearance and, let’s face it, they were kinda crappy! Like many kids of my generation, I spent many weekends with my grandparents. My parents were into sports, so I loved to play anything. My grandparents played golf, so we did that once in a while, but most of the time I spent my time with my grandmother playing cards and checkers. I played chess with my grandfather, but I had no chance against him!
On the other hand, the deck of cards offered hours of game playing fun. My grandmother and I played Gin Rummy, Casino, War, and several solitaire variations. To this day, shuffling a deck of cards brings me back to my lovey grandmother and the lightning fast way she shuffled and then bridged the deck of cards. The greatest part of playing cards with my grandparents was that my grandfather, known as the “Gray Fox,” could never beat my grandmother at Gin.
When I discuss with my fellow gamers about card games, I invariably hear about Magic, Yughio, and Pokemon. I ask if they didn’t grow up playing card games with regular decks of cards. Most say “No” to having played any type of card game. Some played Gin. But didn’t really like playing. I am completely shocked! I always reply that these games have real strategy and both players have an equal chance to win! Amazingly, I’m met with indifference.
Well world, I like card games. There I said it! I feel it’s my duty to put out the call to all card gamers, Cards Are Fun! Here is a short list of card games and their basic directions to entice you into going back to playing cards…
